Description

In the Dominican Republic's Cibao Valley, cacao grows on a Bird Friendly® certified farm that provides critical habitat for migratory birds. Each spring, those birds fly north and land in maple groves like the ones on the family farm in Maine where we source our maple sugar. So we made a bar with just the two ingredients that bookend their journey: cacao and maple sugar. It tastes like a Belgian waffle piled with wild berries and warm maple syrup, and supports the important conservation work happening on these farms. We can't get enough.

About Smithsonian Bird Friendly®: This bar is made using 100% Bird Friendly certified cocoa. The Bird Friendly certification, developed by Smithsonian scientists, is rooted in decades of ecological research. It guarantees that certified farms are deforestation-free, certified organic, and maintain habitat for birds through either diverse shade trees or protected forest areas. When you buy Bird Friendly chocolate, you are supporting producers who are doing the hard work of conservation in the field and are also supporting the ongoing research and agricultural extension led by the Bird Friendly program.

Cocoa beans, maple sugar

Seahorse Chocolate joined 1% for the Planet to back up our values with action. Through this membership, we donate one percent of our annual sales to groups working to protect biodiversity and build climate resilience in cocoa landscapes. This commitment gives us the chance to support the people and organizations doing critical on-the-ground work where cocoa is grown.
Cacao is especially well-suited to play a key role in climate and biodiversity solutions. When grown in diverse agroforestry systems, it can support healthy ecosystems, store carbon, retain water, and help protect soil, all while offering a profitable crop for smallholder farmers. These working landscapes are essential to meeting global conservation goals. Through 1% for the Planet, we’re investing in the future of cocoa and the landscapes that make great chocolate possible. We’ll be sharing more soon about the projects we support through our newsletter, so join us here for updates.

Audubon Bird-Friendly | Gray Jay Maple Works

Gray Jay Maple Works has earned Audubon's public recognition for managing their sugarbush, a maple forest stand, to support nesting and migratory birds and overall forest health. Over 25% of forest-dependent bird populations have declined in the last 50 years. Most of them live on privately owned land like this.
